Maidenhead United boss Johnson Hippolyte claims anyone watching Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Basingstoke Town would agree his side deserved at least a point.
Trailing 3-2 at half-time, United dominated the second period and created numerous chances but failed to put the ball in the back of the net.
All the goals came in the first half with Manny Williams, Shaun McAuley and Louie Soares scoring for the hosts with Danny Green and Tashan Adeyinka replying for the Magpies.
Dave Tarpey rattled the foot of the post, Danny Green struck the crossbar with a curling free-kick, and Tashan Adeyinka’s close range effort was pushed over the crossbar by Basingstoke stopper Stuart Moore, while United’s new keeper Ashley Timms was forced into only one meaningful second half stop, from Town striker Liam Enver-Marum.
“We’ve hit the post; we’ve hit the crossbar; we’ve had maybe two shots cleared off the line,” said Hippolyte.
“How we haven’t got at least a point is beyond me.
“Their bench said to me 'bloody hell Drax, how have we got three points?'. Anyone watching today will know we should have got something out of it.
“We defended better in the second half, but we just couldn't get that ball over the line.”
United looked the more likely side to score after the interval, but were denied by a mixture of wasteful finishing and inspired keeping by Town’s Moore.
“We looked really lively, and like I've said, we have to score great goals,” he said.
“People don't make mistakes for us to score, and we've scored some great goals today.
“We've been really unlucky. Tarps has hit the post with the keeper beaten all ends up, Greeny hits the crossbar and it comes back the wrong side for Tashan following it in. Unbelievable.”
United host Chesham United in their Berks & Bucks Cup semi-final clash at York Road tomorrow night (Tuesday, 7.45pm ko). Aylesbury United await the winners in the final.
