The glass might be half empty for many of Maidenhead United’s long-suffering supporters, but manager Johnson Hippolyte firmly believes that results will come for his hard-working side.
The United boss is targeting three points from Saturday’s home game against Bishop’s Stortford as they bid to improve on a run that has brought just two league wins since the middle of October.
“We’re playing well,” he said.
“The attitude is good and the spirit is good. It’s not like we’re having team meetings and I’m having fights with people.
“The spirit is really good and everybody is happy, apart from with the final results. But I believe those results will come.”
United are 14th in the Conference South and summer acquisitions and loan additions have certainly made them harder to beat, but Hippolyte is keen to get the wins they need to get rid of all the ‘negativity’.
“For me the glass is half full,” he said.
“That’s the case but everyone I speak to is so negative it’s starting to do my head in, in all honesty.
“Four games we’ve lost since September. I’d have bitten your hand off for that. Obviously we’ve got a few draws and would have been happier if they’d been wins, but if you’d said to me before Christmas that we’d go six or seven games unbeaten before losing in an FA Trophy replay, I’d have taken that.
He added: “You can’t please everybody and there are a lot of people that can’t be pleased no matter what we do. We’ve just got to keep doing our best because that’s all we can do.”
Stortford arrive after a testing Conference South season, but buoyed by their win over Hayes and Yeading at the weekend.
“They’re fighting for their lives,” said Drax.
“They’ve got a new manager who’s trying to turn things around because they’re in a precarious position. But we want to beat Bishop’s Stortford and I will be doing everything in my power to ensure we beat Bishop’s Stortford.
“We just need a little bit of lady luck, and to take our chances when the turn up.”
The United camp will go through a few changes over the coming weeks, with several players set to be loaned out. Hippolyte is also hopeful of boosting his attacking options.
“I’ve made a few calls to get another Conference striker into the club, but you know what it’s like, he’s speaking to three or four clubs,” said Drax.
“We want to get in people that will strengthen us, but it’s got to be the right person for the right money.”
Defender Devante McKain has been recalled to Gillingham FC after his loan spell with the Magpies, which Hippolyte admitted was a ‘kick in the teeth’.
However, the club moved swiftly to bring in defender De’Reece Vanderhyde ahead of last Saturday’s FATrophy tie against Farnborough at YorkRoad.
