Dozens of skaters, bikers and scooter riders showed off their skills at the Twyford Skatepark Opening Jam on Saturday.
Guests were at the new facility in the King George V Recreation Ground to celebrate its official opening following a £200,000 transformation project, funded through Twyford Parish Council.
The original skatepark at the location was built nearly 20 years ago and a project had been initiated last year to provide an upgraded space for users.
The Twyford Skatepark Project has been a collaborative effort between Twyford Parish Council, skaters in the area and Maverick Industries who were awarded the tender after contractors submitted bids.
Following a consultation phase, which saw feedback from users of all ages and skill levels, the final design was approved and work to build the new skatepark in partnership with Maverick started in January.
The new facility provides a modern concrete skatepark.
The ‘state-of-the-art design’ includes a range of obstacles, ramps and flow areas ‘ensuring a safe, inclusive, and dynamic space for skaters of all abilities’, Twyford Parish Council said.
The skatepark did initially open on Friday, March 7 and is designed for BMX riders, skaters and scooter enthusiasts at all levels.
The Opening Jam at the weekend saw many take to the new skatepark to show off their tricks.
There was a ‘buzzing community atmosphere’ as guests celebrated the opening of the new facility and enjoyed ‘great music’.
The parish council has thanked Maverick’s event team for leading the entertainment and the skaters, riders, spectators and volunteers ‘who made it a day to remember’.
Support was also received from other organisations to help towards extra additions for the project.
These organisations included Bulldog, Phoxy Designs, Haines Hill, Sport England, Polehampton Charities, Ruscombe Parish Council, The Piggott School, Twyford Together and Twyford & District Round Table.
A Crowdfunding campaign launched by the parish council and Friends of Twyford Skatepark was boosted by local businesses who offered ‘reward’ donations and ‘dedicated fundraisers’ who rallied at events such as the Donkey Derby, Twyford Beer Festival and Twyford Village Fete.
The Crowdfunder has raised more than £11,800.
Through the support of the community, enough money was raised to fund extra additions to the new skatepark, including a tool station, seating and first aid workshops.
The project has its own logo and Twyford Skatepark merchandise, with all profits going towards supporting future improvements.
“More than just a skatepark, this space represents years of dedication, teamwork, and passion,” a post on the parish council’s website added.
